IXYS Intros New Discrete NPT 1,700V IGBTs

January 23, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

IXYS Corp. (Santa Clara, CA) has announced the availability of a new line of 1,700V IGBTs, which provide a cost-effective solution for applications requiring 1,700V power switching. The devices are suitable for pulsed lasers, capacitive discharge circuits, defibrillators, as well as other high-voltage industrial and instrumentation applications. The high speed "A" devices are intended for high-voltage, fast-switching applications up to 100kHz such as induction heating/cooking, 480Vac to 575Vac offline inverters, flyback power supplies, UPS and microwave ovens, and horizontal and vertical deflection circuits for CRTs.

The devices offer improvements in efficiency and reliability due to reduced voltage drop, lower switching losses and the need for fewer components. The products, based on IXYS' NPT technology, are offered in versions for pulsed and fast-switching applications up to 100kHz. The full range of products rated from 6A to 32A is housed in the popular TO-247 discrete package, as well as the surface-mount TO-268.

The "non-A" versions optimized for low-frequency applications less than 15kHz have a VCE(SAT) of 3V, an increased gain to allow high-current pulses with standard gate drive voltage, and a typical fall time of 300 nanoseconds. The devices feature 90°C current ratings of 6A to 32A, providing transient pulse current capability of 24A to 200A. The "A" versions optimized for fast switching, feature an industry-leading fall time of less then 50 nanoseconds.

Many of the devices will be available as samples by mid-February 2003. All parts will be available as samples by April 2003.
