IRC Introduces New Pulse-Withstanding Chip Resistors

New Products Aug 30, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

IRC, Inc. has introduced pulse-withstanding chip resistors that combine extended surge values with high voltage ratings. Designated the PWC Series, the resistors — suitable for power supplies and circuit protection devices — are available in 0805, 1206, 2010 and 2512 chip sizes.

"The combination of the high surge and high voltage ratings makes the PWC Series a good fit for the most demanding applications, including those involving turn-on surges and lightning pulses," said Gary Bleasdell, Thick Film Business Unit Director for IRC's Advanced Film Division. "Additionally, the footprint of the resistors is quite small, so they take up minimal board space, providing manufacturers with an excellent alternative to multi-chip solutions."

The PWC Series resistors are also suitable for portable battery chargers, motor controls and line-powered equipment. In the 0805, 1206, 2010, and 2512 package sizes, the PWC Series resistors feature power ratings of 125mW, 330mW, 750mW and 1.5W, with maximum voltage ratings of 150V, 200V, 400V and 500V, respectively. Resistance range is from 1.0W to 10MW, with available tolerances from ±0.5% to ±5%. Absolute TCRs are ±100ppm/°C at 10W and higher and ±200ppm/°C at less than 10W. Operating temperature range is -55°C to +155°C. IRC will also produce devices outside these specifications to meet customer requirements. Pricing for the PWC 2512 Series resistors is $.39 each in quantities of 5,000. Lead time is stock to 8 weeks.
