IR Intros IRS2153D MOSFET Lighting Control IC

November 21, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Power-management semiconductor firm International Rectifier Corp. (IR, El Segundo, CA) introduced the new IRS2153D, an electronic ballast integrated circuit (IC) for fluorescent lamps. The new 600 V self-oscillating, half-bridge IC includes an internal bootstrap diode to simplify circuits. The IRS2153D has an oscillator frequency precision of three percent, which helps to optimize external component selection for uniform lamp brightness during manufacturing. A pre-heat feature, which sets the correct pre-heat frequency for the correct duration, helping to maximize lamp life, can be realized externally.

The IC is lead-free, and includes a 2 V under-voltage lockout hysteresis for more robust ballast circuits, and prevents unwanted shutdown if momentary transients occur. In addition, the new IRS2153D includes an under-voltage lockout circuit that ensures that the high-side floating voltage correctly switches the high-side gate driver output, protecting the external MOSFET. The new IRS2153D is based on the IR2153x product family that integrates a "555" type oscillator circuit with a 600 V half-bridge gate driver to drive two output FETs or IGBTs. The IRS2153D is made with IR's proprietary high-voltage integrated circuit technology, which is suitable for designing products to drive MOSFETs and IGBTs. Gate drive outputs are designed using a latch-immune CMOS circuit. The technology integrates a low-voltage driver with a high-voltage level shifter for high-side and low-side gate drivers in one monolithic IC.

Pricing for the IRS2153DPbF, IRS2153DSPbF, and IRS2153DSTRPbF is $0.80 each in 10,000-unit quantities, and are available either in tubes or tape-and-reel packages. Prices are subject to change. The devices are lead-free and are compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive.
