New Products Mar 26, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

H Power Corp. (Clifton, NJ) introduced a pre-commercial version of its new EPAC-500 fuel-cell-based power source, which is being demonstrated in conjunction with H Power’s marketing partner, Energy Co-Opportunity Inc. The EPAC-500 utilizes a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell stack, and can be used as either a primary or backup power device in a wide range of applications, including telecommunications.

The EPAC-500 is a self-contained, rack-mountable, 500W fuel cell power source designed for outdoor or indoor use and intended initially for industrial customers. The unit can be mounted in a standard 19in equipment rack and has three possible outputs - 120Vac at 60Hz, 48V regulated dc and 48V unregulated dc. The system can be set to act as a stand-alone power source, or to self-start upon electrical grid failure. In its initial form, the unit is designed to run on compressed hydrogen from standard industrial cylinders.
