Generac Power Systems Debuts Generac Modular Power System

April 04, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Generac Power Systems (Waukesha, WI) introduced the new Generac Modular Power (GMP) System, designed for applications requiring 800kW to 2MW. The modular power system consists of two or more small diesel gensets in a side-by-side parallel arrangement. These modular generators can be operated singly or in concert with each other. Generac claims that they are priced approximately 20 to 30 percent lower than large, single-engine units.

The GMP System is designed to implement n+1 redundancy. The individual gensets being combined can vary in output rating, so the system can be precisely matched to load requirements in any increment of 100kW. The modular design also allows a system to be expanded, by adding another genset. The gensets can be monitored by remote control using Generac's GenLink monitoring software. This PC-based system allows users to check all functions, whether on-site or from a remote location.

The new Generac system provides standby paralleling automatically. When an outage occurs, the generators are started and paralleled together. Then the load is transferred to them through a standard ATS or GTS transfer switch. During standby operation, the generators will all operate at the same output to share the load uniformly.

The generators may also be operated at power levels independent of each other, for base loading or peak shaving applications. They can be paralleled prior to being paralleled to the utility, or else paralleled to the utility one-at-a-time. During standby operation, when a utility outage occurs, the generators will function in standby parallel mode. With either system, up to five generators can be paralleled, producing 480Vac at 60Hz.
