FDK Announces Ultra Capacitor Modules For Vehicles

November 04, 2008 by Jeff Shepard

FDK Corp. is introducing the new ECM15P series EneCapTen ultra capacitor modules for use in vehicles. The ECM15P is said to provide high power with long life and best-in-class thermal performance of up to 80°C.

FDK’s 15V ultra capacitors are modularized versions of its original high-capacity EneCapTen capacitor cells for vehicle use. The capacitors are said to have a long cycle life of over 500,000 cycles, a high power density relative to batteries, and an efficiency rating of 99.9%. Although only 260 x 210 x 60mm in size, they have 525F of capacitance, 10.5Wh of energy capacity, and 5kW of maximum power. As these modules can charge and discharge both by a high power supply of several hundred amperes and a low power supply, they have many applications for use in vehicles.

The company claims that, by using the ECM15P series, it is possible to set up the following systems: set up a compact idling stop system which can regenerate electric power during deceleration; extend the product life of lead acid batteries or lithium ion batteries which are used alternately or simultaneously with the ECM ultra capacitor; the ECM 15P can be placed near the engine, thus reducing the length of the electric wires and the resistance loss.

The ECM15P modules are environmentally friendly, safe, and secure. They do not use heavy metals or flammable materials thus they will not rupture and ignite. They are equipped with balance circuits to equalize each cell’s voltage, protection circuits to prevent over charge and discharge, and have an advanced power management system with microcomputer control as standard equipment.

FDK can meet a wide variety of customer needs through its integrated production system that takes the product from cell production to electric circuit design, circuit implementation, and module assembly. Samples will be available in November.
