Exar Unveils New Constant On-Time Step-Down Controller

February 16, 2011 by Jeff Shepard

Exar Corp. unveiled the XRP6124, a non-synchronous constant on-time step-down controller for up to 5A point-of-loads. This device is the latest addition to Exar’s family of step-down controllers and is offered in two versions: 18 and 30V and is optimized for 12V and 24V input voltage rails.

"The XRP6124’s unique architecture enhances performance by dramatically improving line regulation and surpasses traditional constant on-time controller topologies by enabling direct usage of cost effective ceramic output capacitors," said Eric Pittana, Director of Marketing, Power Product Line. "The XRP6124 is the first of many devices which will be derived from this new architecture. It maintains a very simple implementation while achieving higher performances."

Reaching up to 92% efficiency in a compact package the XRP6124, a non-synchronous 500ns constant on-time controller, operates at a quasi-constant switching frequency of up to 1MHz and supports input voltages up to 30V and adjustable output voltages as low as 1.2V. The proprietary control architecture provides for extremely fast line and load transient responses, requires no external compensation circuitry and allows usage of cost effective ceramic output capacitors. Design flexibility for point-of-load supplies with the XRP6124 is further enhanced with the availability of a dedicated enable function and built-in soft start. Output short circuit protection provides the XRP6124 with fail-safe operation.

The XRP6124 is available now in two versions, the XRP6124 and XRP6124HV, supporting input voltages respectively up to 18 and 30V. Both versions are available in volume quantities and offered in a RoHS compliant, "green" halogen free 5-pin SOT23 package. Pricing starts at $0.35 for the XRP6124 and $0.45 for the XRP6124HV for 1K units.
