Emerson Intros Astec's HPS35 Power Supply Modules

April 05, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (St. Louis, MO), launched a new line of 350 W ac-dc bulk power supply modules from its Astec Power division. The high-efficiency modules are available in 12 Vdc and will be available in 48 Vdc in the second quarter of 2004. An additional 24 V output option will be available later this year. The new devices target data communications, data storage, telecom and industrial applications that use distributed power architecture.

The HPS35 modules deliver 350 W of output power at 80-percent efficiency. A 19 in rack can be configured with up to four of the compact modules for a total of 1,400 W of clean bulk dc power in less than 400 in³ of rack space. For maximum system reliability, the hot-swappable modules can also be installed in N+1 redundant configurations. The HPS35 modules accept ac input from 90 Vac to 264 Vac, and feature active power-factor correction (typically >0.98) that meets EN61000-3-2 standards for input-current harmonic content.

The single-output devices provide either 116.8 A at 12 Vdc or 29.2 A at 48 Vdc, and also offer a standby supervisory output of 5 V at 2 A. The new HPS35 modules operate without derating over a wide temperature range from -10 °C to +50 °C, and conform to industry standards for shock and vibration. Operation from 50 °C to 70 °C is possible by de-rating the output by 2.5 percent per degree above 50 °C.

Prices for the new models start at less than $250 for basic modules, excluding rack hardware. Additional output selections are slated for availability later this year. The 1U 19 in rack can be ordered separately.
