Elcon Enhances CROWN EDGE Power Connectors

New Products Mar 08, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Elcon Products International Co. (Fremont, CA) has enhanced its line of CROWN EDGE card edge-style, high-current power connectors with support for current interruption under load as defined by safety regulatory agencies and new board termination options. CROWN EDGE is a family of versatile modules that utilize high-performance Crown contact technology reconfigured to create a card edge-style socket suitable for high-current distribution applications. The product family is composed of a series of modules with power, signal and mixed contacts that the design engineer can combine to meet the requirements of the application.

The modules can be placed end-to-end for assemblies of up to 8in (203.20mm) long. Typical applications for the CROWN EDGE connectors include dc/dc converters, UPSs, power supplies and any other power-delivery system that could benefit from a reliable high-current card edge connector. The power connectors now feature hot-plug modules that support current interruption under load as defined by safety regulatory agencies, achieved by mating the CROWN EDGE modules with a metal blade or bus bar. The modules have been evaluated and recognized by Underwriters Laboratories and comply with the UL1977 standard for current interruption up to 50 cycles, with a current of 35A at less than 30 degrees C temperature rise. In addition to the previous compliant press-fit termination, CROWN EDGE now offers the choice of solder termination to boards from 0.062in (1.6mm) to 0.125in (3.0mm) thick with two different tail lengths.

Pricing starts at under $1.50 for the four power contact modules, and less than $2 for the six power contact modules. The products are currently in production.
