Cherokee Presents Apollo 4 DC/DC Converter

March 03, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Cherokee International LLC (Tustin, CA) announced the extra-dense Apollo 4 (QB5048) dc/dc converter, which offers the power of a half brick in an open-frame, standard quarter-brick footprint (1.45in x 2.28in). The Apollo 4 delivers high currents of 50A at high efficiencies even in the low-voltage modules (91 percent at 3.3V and 89 percent at 1.8V). The single-output converters have an industry-leading power density of 97.5W/in³ while handling input voltages across a wide input range from 36Vdc to 75Vdc in accordance with ETSI and Bellcore specifications.

Providing a full 50A of current, at 1.8V and below without derating, in ambient operating environments of 50°C and 300LFM, the converters meet basic insulation requirements of EN60950 and come complete with industry-standard features such as remote on/off, remote sensing, an output voltage adjust pin, over-temperature protection, output over-current and over-voltage protection, and input under-voltage protection. Additional features include 1,500Vdc input-to-output isolation, a set-point accuracy of two percent, no minimum load requirements, constant-frequency operation for predictable EMI characteristics, tightly regulated outputs, low ripple and noise, and auto restart after fault shutdown. An external heatsink can be mounted on the baseplate version for operation in elevated ambient conditions where airflow is minimal.

The Apollo 4 is available in 5V, 3.3V, 2.5V, 1.8V, 1.5V and 1.2V output-voltage modules and is priced at $74 for quantities of 1,000 units. Samples are available directly through Cherokee International.
