January 17, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Champion Microelectronic Corp. (Taiwan) announced the new CM8685 5W Class D amplifier, which is a switching type device that is housed in either an eight-pin SOP or PDIP. The amplifier does not require a heatsink. It is employed in battery-operated, portable products such as CD, VCD and DVD players; gaming devices; and notebook computers with DVD-ROMs.

The device integrates power MOSFETs, provides closed-loop and feed-forward compensation, incorporates thermal-protection features, and offers better frequency than traditional models. The supply voltage ranges from 2V to 5V. The quiescent current is rated at 3mA, while the shutdown current is 1µA.

The CM8685 amplifier is priced at $0.60 each.
