Calex Announces HW Series of DC/DC Converters

June 18, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Calex Manufacturing Co. Inc. (Concord, CA) announced its new 5W single-output HW Series of dc/dc converters. The HW Series offers 21 models with output voltages of 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, 5V, 12V and 15V. All models offer a 2:1 input-voltage range. Nominal input voltages are 12Vdc, 24Vdc and 48Vdc. The input ranges are 9V to 18V; 18V to 36V; and 36V to 72V, respectively. Each unit is fully self-contained in a 1.25in x 0.8in x 0.40in package. No external components or filtering is necessary for all but the most critical applications.

The HW Series is isolated input to output. The isolation voltage is 700Vdc. Input-to-output capacitance is 1,500pF. The switching frequency is 400kHz, and the company claims that efficiencies run as high as 84 percent. The case temperature operating range for all models is -50 to 90 degrees C.

The HW Series is claimed to have load regulation as good as 0.4 percent maximum for a 25- to 100-percent full-rated load charge. Line regulation varies between 1 and 0.1 percent, depending on the output voltage. As the output voltage gets higher, both line and load regulation get tighter. The transient response is 250us for the 1.5V, 1.8V, 3.3V and 5V models. Transient response is 500us for the 5V output model, and 500us for the 12V and 15V models.
