BI Technologies Presents 7720 Series PFC Modules
BI Technologies (Fullerton, CA), a subsidiary of TT electronics plc (Patterson, NJ), offered a new series of low-profile, compact, power-factor correction modules that range from 500 W to 3,000 W. In addition, the company has recently developed a ready-to-run evaluation board/design tool capable of testing the modules. The addition of power-factor correction circuitry enables switching power supplies with ratings higher than 75 W to make optimum use of the available ac line current, while allowing the unit to meet harmonic requirements. It is mandatory in Europe, and is rapidly being accepted in North America.
The 7720 Series module replaces up to 10 TO-220 or TO-247 discrete power semiconductors required to achieve power-factor correction in a conventional power supply design. The power modules are available in three standard configurations -- the model 7720-1A for power supplies from 1,500 W to 3,000 W (600 V/25 A rectifier; 500 V/0.1 W MOSFET), the model 7720-2A for power supplies from 1,000 W to 2.250 W (600 V/25 A rectifier; 500 V/0.3 W MOSFET), and the model 7720-3A for power supplies from 500 W to 1,500 W (600 V/18 A rectifier; 500 V/0.2 W MOSFET).
The operating temperature range for all the 7720 Series is -40 °C to +125 °C, and the devices have a footprint of 1.380 in x 2.230 in, with a board-mounted profile of 0.200 in. The power-factor correction evaluation board contains all of the necessary control and power circuitry, along with the required inductor assembled onto a compact board. With correction to near unity power factor and better than 95 percent efficiency, the board can easily be used to evaluate a wide variety of applications, including switching power supplies from 500 W to 3,000 W, motor drives, servo amplifiers, solenoid drivers, solid-state relays, and three-phase rectifier bridges.
The ready-to-run evaluation board accepts 85 Vrms to 265 Vrms input voltage at 50 Hz to 60 Hz, and is capable of handling up to 3 kW of power with a proper cooled heatsink. Pricing for the evaluation board is $199, while pricing for the modules begins at under $20 in volume. Lead time is from stock to 12 weeks.
