austriamicrosystems Announces High-Efficiency 3A Step-Down Converter

August 17, 2011 by Jeff Shepard

austiamicrosystems has announced a new high-efficiency 1.5MHz synchronous dc-dc step-down converter, the AS1328. The new buck regulator offers efficiencies up to 96%, along with a quiescent current of 25µA.

The AS1328DC-DC delivers up to 3A of output current at output voltages as low as 0.6V, operating from an input voltage of 2.7V to 5.5V over a -40°C to 85°C temperature range. The converters are available in fixed-output voltages in 50mV increments, or the output voltage can be set from 0.6V to the input voltage via an external resistor divider. The AS1328 converter also incorporates a Softstart feature to minimize the initial inrush current, and it is available with a “power okay” function or “low battery” detection signal.

Internal compensation components, along with two 35mΩ RDSon switches, are incorporated to conserve board space. A high fixed switching frequency of 1.5MHz allows the use of small surface mount inductors with the AS1328, which is housed in a 3x3mm TQFN package.

The AS1328 converter is targeted for applications powered by a single Li-ion battery, as well as portable devices such as medical instruments, mobile internet devices and tablet PCs. The converter is also suited for applications requiring high currents, including solid state drives, set top boxes, base stations, telecom and network equipment, FPGA, DDR and µP cores supplies. Pricing is $1.30 in 1000-piece quantities.
