Astec Power Launches Series of High-Efficiency DC/DC Converters

October 17, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Astec Power (Carlsbad, CA) has launched a series of high-efficiency models to complement its high-density dc/dc converter product line. With a temperature range spanning from -40 to 100 degrees C, Astec claims that the new products feature fast transient response with stability in high-frequency applications. The new models have fixed-switching frequency operation and no load/very high capacitive limits.

The units are available in 48V input, with output choices of 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V and 5.0V. They are suitable for use in telecommunications and data communications applications, as well as automated test and measurement equipment. They operate over an input range of 36V to 75V. Under-voltage lockout and over-temperature protection shutdown enable the units to meet ETSI- and NEBS-compliance standards. They also the standard telecom EN41003 isolation requirements of 1,500V and, when fitted with external filters, they conform to FCC Class B and EN55022 emission standards. Typical applications include wireless transmitters and receivers, wireless base stations, instrumentation, and Internet-working devices such as hubs, routers and ATM equipment.

Astec’s new models have a quarter-size footprint of 2.3” x 1.45”. The AK45C provides 100W of output power at up to 89- to 90-percent efficiency. Other features include predictable EMI performance, low output ripple and noise, remote sensing, and TTL-compatible remote-enable with positive or negative polarity. The BK60C units have safety agency certifications from UL, CSA and VDE.

Priced from $78 in quantities of 1,000, the models are available beginning June 2001.
