Artesyn Offers New Typhoon SMT15F Modules

April 26, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Boca Raton, FL), a leader in power conversion solutions for the communications industry, launched a series of 15 A non-isolated, point-of-load (POL), dc-dc converter modules for applications demanding fast transient response capabilities. The new Typhoon™ SMT15F modules can accommodate step-load changes in excess of 300 A/µsec. The converters are the latest additions to Artesyn’s F class line of POL products, which are designed to power advanced silicon devices that demand high currents and switch at very fast speeds, such as network and communications processors, and the high-performance ASICs, FPGAs and DSPs.

The SMT15F Series modules are completely self-contained, drop-in power solutions, requiring no additional components. The SMT15F Series features nominal output voltages of 1.0 V, 1.2 V, 1.5 V and 1.8 V; output current of 15 A; output voltage trim of ±±10 percent of nominal; a wide input-voltage range of 10.8 V to 13.2 V for use on boards employing intermediate bus architectures (IBA); a high switching frequency of 1 MHz; a typical efficiency of 88 percent (1.8 V output model); an industry-standard footprint of 1.3 in x 0.53 in x 0.3 in (33 mm x 13.5 mm x 7.6 mm); a wide operational temperature range of –40 °C to +85 °C ambient; remote sense and remote on/off facilities; no minimum load requirement; over-temperature and short-circuit protection; and deviation by less than 43 mV for a 5 A change in load current at a rate of 100 A/µsec, with full recovery in under 5µsec for the 1.2 V model.

The SMT15F POL converters carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 and UL/cUL60950. Sample quantities of the SMT15F converters are available for immediate delivery, and production quantities will be supplied in 30-piece tray carriers. Pricing for 1,000-piece quantities is $19.93, and the standard lead time is stock to eight weeks.
