Artesyn Debuts SIL30E and SMT30E Series POL Converters
Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Boca Raton, FL), a leader in power conversion solutions for the communications, launched two series of ultra-compact, 30 A, point-of-load (POL) converter modules for use on densely packed PCBs. The SIL30E and SMT30E non-isolated POL converters accommodate output voltages from 0.8 V to 3.63 V and can deliver up to 30 A. The converters form the latest additions to Artesyn’s family of Point-Of-Load Alliance (POLA) products, and are fully compatible with similar products produced by other members of POLA.
The SIL30E vertical-mount modules occupy a board area of 0.6 in² (4 cm²), while the surface-mount SMT30E modules are 0.32 in (8.1 mm) high. Both series of products feature high current densities (the SMT30E achieves in excess of 136 A/in³ (8.3 A/cm³). The converters both achieve 92% at 12 Vin, 3.3 Vout, and both series of converters are suitable for forced-air or convection-cooled environments and accommodate a wide operational temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C ambient, with derating.
The SIL30E converter features a single-in-line package with a footprint of 2.0 in x 0.31 in (50.8 mm x 7.8 mm) and a height of 0.5 in (12.7 mm). The SMT30E has an industry-standard 1.3 in x 0.53 in (33 mm x 13.5 mm) footprint and an above-board height of 0.32 in (8.1 mm). They are suited to high-end applications in the telecommunications and data communications markets, such as optical switches and high-capacity network routers.
The SIL30E and SMT30E Series POL converters are intended primarily for boards that use distributed power architectures with an intermediate 12 V bus. They have a wide input-voltage range of 8 V to 14V, enabling a variety of isolated bricks and intermediate bus converters to be used for generating the bus voltage, as well as supporting a 12 V ac-dc power architecture. Even when delivering a full 30 A current, the converters have a wide output trim range of 0.8 V to 3.63 V.
Artesyn’s SIL30E and SMT30E POL converters carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 and UL/cUL60950. In OEM quantities of 1,000, unit prices are $23 for both the vertical-mount SIL30E and the surface-mount SMT30E. Standard lead time for both models is stock to six to eight weeks.
