Analog Devices Inc. (Wilmington, MA) announced its new 30Mbps, 5V, 0.9mA, RS-485 transceiver, the ADM1486, which enables lower-power, lower-cost PROFIBUS and industrial applications. Designed for bi-directional data communication on multi-point bus transmission lines, the ADM1486 features a 2.1V minimum differential output drive and 8ns propagation delays, and allows faster, more robust transmission over longer distances than standard RS-485 transmission when used in PROFIBUS-compliant applications, according to the company.

The ADM1486 meets and surpasses EIA, RS-485, RS-422 specifications and is PROFIBUS compatible. Operating from a single 5V power supply, the device contains a differential line driver and a differential line receiver, each of which can be enabled independently, thus minimizing loading effects when either or both are not utilized. Thermal shutdown and short-circuit protection safeguard against fault conditions, and extremely fast, closely matched, switching speeds permit data transmission rates of up to 30Mbps with minimal EMI interference. The ADM1486 is fully specified over the industrial temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C and is fabricated on BiCMOS technology.

The ADM1486 is available in an eight-lead SOIC package, and is priced at $1.50 per unit in 1,000-piece quantities. Samples are available today, with production quantities available in October 2002.
