American Power Conversion Introduces Symmetra RM Power-Protection Solution

August 06, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

American Power Conversion (West Kingston, RI) announced a new fully scaleable and redundant rack-mount power-protection solution, specifically designed to protect both data and rack-based equipment. The Symmetra RM, available in sizes ranging from 2kVA to 6kVA, will protect on average 5 to 20 servers from power anomalies and outages and can be fully managed and controlled through an integrated web/SNMP management card. This product occupies only 8U of vertical rack space and is the latest addition to the company's field-proven award-winning Symmetra Power Array family, which to date ranges from 4kVA to 16kVA tower models.

The Symmetra RM's architecture is similar to the design of RAID technology that offers complete redundancy to every critical component of the system. The Symmetra features a rack-mount frame with slots to handle both power and battery modules that share the load. It also features an intelligent module and a redundant intelligent module. If any single module fails, the others seamlessly pick up the load and output power remains uninterrupted. When the frame is fully populated with power and battery modules, the system will support a total load of 6kVA with N+1 redundancy. This new rack-mount design also lets IT managers reduce the costs associated with servicing the Symmetra RM, since each module is user-serviceable and hot-swappable.

According to the company, when it becomes necessary to increase power capacity or runtime, additional modules can be added at any time, eliminating the need for expensive service contracts and system over-sizing. In addition, the Symmetra RM will include the web/SNMP Management Card, as well as the award-winning PowerChute, plus network shutdown software. The web/SNMP management card gives users the ability to remotely identify potential problems and proactively manage all company devices via a web browser.
