Acconeer Develops a New Radar Sensor in Collaboration with Rohde & Schwarz

May 12, 2020 by Stephanie Leonida

Acconeer develops a new low-power pulsed coherent radar sensor with help from Rohde & Schwarz.

Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) is an industry leader in the areas of information, communication, and security. The group provides a wide range of electronic capital goods for business areas including RF test and measurement, wireless communications, broadcast and media, cybersecurity, air traffic control, and military communications, and network technology.

Recently, the company provided radar sensor expert, Acconeer, with its R&S FSW85 signal and spectrum analyzer to help the company develop its new, innovative sensor, A111.

Acconeer is a provider of state of the art radar technology for a number of applications from autonomous vehicles, e-health, power tools, human device interaction, mobile and wearables, robotics, and the internet of things (IoT).

Development of Acconeer’s New Radar Sensor

Acconeer developed its A111 pulsed coherent radar (PCR) ultra-low-power radar sensor to satisfy the needs of consumers using battery-powered IoT devices. It features two channels, a receiver, and a transmitter, a controller, power management, and a timing block, all on the same die.

Acconeer ensures excellent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and high bandwidth were built into its new radar sensor so that it was second to none. Doing so would be integral for applications including gesture control, material recognition, object and presence detection, level, and speed measurements.

Acconeer engineers chose R&S’ FSW signal and spectrum analyzer with the R&S FSW-B8 resolution bandwidth option to maximize the SNR and optimize sensor bandwidth.

The device enables engineers to visualize and optimize the radar pulse frequency spectrum without violating the spectrum regulations for short-range devices.

The R&S FSW analyzer incorporates an 800 MHz real-time analysis bandwidth, unparalleled low noise, and high level of sensitivity. The analyzer also features SCPI recorder for simplification of code generation, new flat windows 10 design, and multitouch gesture support.

"As a growing company focusing on technological innovation, we are pleased to be able to push the envelope with the help of the R&S FSW. With the resolution bandwidth option, the analyzer features very good SNR in the V band frequency range of the radar (57 GHz to 64 GHz), which is particularly useful for our products,” said Josefin Strahl, Head of Hardware Integration at Acconeer. “Acconeer has substantial experience of using Rohde & Schwarz equipment, and we are happy to continue using the company's top-level T&M solutions.”
