Torex has added the newly‐developed XCL102/XCL103 series of ultra-compact (external dimensions: 2.5mm x 2.0mm, h=1.0mm) step-up micro dc-dc converters with built-in inductors and control ICs. Since their power circuits can be configured simply by adding external ceramic capacitors, the products in this series can contribute to reducing PCB area space requirements as well as development work time. The use of built-in inductors also allows PCB layouts to be simplified, minimizing unwanted radiation noise and operational trouble.

The input voltage can be selected from 0.65V (operation hold voltage) to 6.0V, and the output voltage from 2.2V to 5.5V (±2.0% precision), both using steps of 0.1V. With an oscillation frequency of 3.0MHz, the control system is selectable from between pwm control (XCL102) or pwm/pfm automatic switching control (XCL103).

Compared to the past XCL101 step‐up micro dc-dc converters which had an output current of 150mA at Vin=3.6V and Vout=5.0V, the XCL102/XCL103 series has an output current of 500mA under the same conditions, making it suitable for even higher‐current applications.

Also, while past products were only compatible with pwm control, this series uses pwm control (XCL102) and pfm/pwm automatic switching control (XCL103) for compatibility with a wide range of applications.

The reduction of unwanted radiation noise, a distinctive characteristic of Torex micro dc-dc converters, makes them highly-suited for wireless devices and other applications that are easily affected by noise. An operation start voltage of 0.9V and an operation hold voltage of 0.65V enable them to also be used for applications driven by a single‐battery power supply.

Other functions of these products include soft‐start, load disconnection, CL auto discharge, and bypass switch functions, all of which are built‐in. Their internal protection circuits include overcurrent limits, integral latches, and output short protection.
