Toshiba Files Patent Infringement Suit against Samsung

May 13, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Toshiba Corp. (Japan) confirmed the company has filed a patent infringement suit against Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. in both the US and Japan. Toshiba's suit alleges that Samsung violated its patents relating to DRAM and NAND flash. Toshiba stated that it currently does not intend to file suit against Samsung in Korea.

"We claim compensation for damages and suspension of business for infringement of Toshiba’s basic patents for DRAM and NAND flash memory," a Toshiba spokesperson said. "We have had a cross-license agreement with Samsung that includes these patents since 1993. On its expiration, we started negotiating renewal, but have not reached a satisfactory conclusion."
