Thin-Film Battery Cost-Effectiveness is Increasing

September 22, 2016 by Jeff Shepard

EnFilm™ thin-film batteries from STMicroelectronics are a new concept of extremely thin (220 µm), rechargeable solid-state batteries with fast constant-voltage recharge and a lifetime of more than 10 years or 4000 cycles. They feature a LiCoO2 cathode, LiPON ceramic electrolyte and a lithium anode, on a 25.7 x 25.7 mm footprint so are completely safe from risks of burning or explosion.

These thin-film batteries are 700uAhr and expected to cost under $4 in high volume. Previous-generations of solid-state batteries cost about $20 for 100uAhr. The capacity, discharge rate and low leakage with the safety of a solid-state electrolyte looks like these were designed to be a great fit for the IoT.

The new NFC power management board kit (EFL1-NFC-PMB) includes a 25 mW NFC contactless smart charger and an EnFilm™ ultra-low current consumption power management solution on a single EFL700A39 footprint-sized board that is only 1 inch². This complete solution is based on the M24LR04 Dynamic NFC/RFID tag IC for NFC control and on the new STBC15A nano-current power management and battery protection. It offers a new and innovative solution for a fast evaluation and an easy wireless charge of EnFilm™ lithium thin-film batteries.

The design of solid state thin film battery EnFilm™ EFL700A39 powered applications can now be evaluated and supported thanks to ST’s newly available kit and boards:

The EFL700PMB – power management board – includes all the necessary power management circuitry around the EFL700A39 for charging and voltage regulation, deep discharge protection and a super-capacitor to sustain a high pulsed discharge current. It can be directly connected to the application for rapid performance evaluation.

The EFL700EVALKIT – evaluation kit – includes the EFL700PMB as well as an LB with analog ammeter and digital voltmeter that enable discovery of the performance of the EFL700A39 by monitoring the voltage and the dynamic charge / discharge current in real use-case conditions. It also includes a pulsed load emulator to simulate applications that wake from sleep mode periodically.

The new EFL1-NFC-PMB – NFC power management board kit – includes a NFC contactless smart charger board and an EnFilm™ ultra-low current consumption power management solution – EFL700A39 footprint-sized. The EFL1-NFC-PMB kit can be directly connected in the application for a fast evaluation and is also compatible with the EnFilm™ monitoring load board.
