Refrigerators going Solid State & Losing the Compressor

July 07, 2016 by Jeff Shepard

Phononic, the company revolutionizing cooling and heating with solid-state technology, recently announced the latest model introduction to its Evolve™ brand. The 5.5 cubic-foot, medical-grade undercounter refrigerator is poised to radically improve the way healthcare safeguards pharmaceutical drugs, vaccines and medical devices with its superior temperature control stability and embedded monitoring software.

In a related development, Haier, which partnered with Phonoic to develop an innovative wine cooler, has announced plans to introduce a full-size, solid-state refrigerator targeted at consumers. The new solid-state refrigerator would be nearly silent, use 25% less energy than compressor-based designs and is expected to cost about the same as today’s models.

Already on the market, the Evolve medical-grade refrigerators meet CDC guidelines for controlled storage of vaccines and pharmaceutical drugs. Using proprietary solid-state technology, Evolve units feature precision temperature control designed to meet NEC requirements which allows rapid temperature recovery after frequent door openings. Temperature is controlled to a true center-air temperature control to a less-than-one-degree variability. The units also feature Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) battery-backup compatibility while operating at the whisper-quiet level of less than 35 decibels at close proximity.

“Our Evolve cold storage line was launched to deliver unprecedented compressor-free cold storage to the healthcare industry,” said Mike Demasi, vice president and general manager of Cold Products at Phononic. “This 5.5 cubic-foot unit builds upon the success of our 1.8 cubic-foot unit launched last year and continues our product portfolio that meets the needs of healthcare everywhere.”

Powered by Phononic’s SilverCore system, Evolve uses solid-state heat pump technology coupled with a non-hazardous, non-toxic refrigerant to give medical facilities smarter, more sustainable and more precise refrigeration. Packed inside of its cleanroom compatible painted steel exterior shell, Evolve models sport an integrated temperature monitoring system with NIST-certified glycol and air sensors. The doors feature keyless entry with a password-protected lock. The unit is also designed to meet ADA compliance countertop height specifications, fitting under the 32-inch counter height.

The Evolve undercounter models are also intelligent. With the product option to be equipped with Phononic’s embedded SilverPoint temperature monitoring solution, operators can log data locally or with WiFi-enabled remote storage.

Having no compressor, Evolve products feature a 100-percent interior capacity, making it ideal for partner Weka Solutions, to host their Vaccine Smart-Fridge dispenser inside this latest EvolveTunit.

”Spoiled inventory due to poor refrigeration or incorrect monitoring of vaccines is not only extremely costly but it also affects patient care,” said Warren Casey, CEO at Weka Solutions. “In searching for the right refrigeration partner to integrate our state-of-the-art automated single-dose inventory dispenser, we quickly realized the potential the Evolve products deliver and it was a no-brainer to partner with Phononic. Medical refrigeration is on the brink of a technological revolution and Phononic is at the helm of it.”
