Metallic Power Ships Zinc Regenerative Fuel Cells

October 08, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Metallic Power Inc. (Carlsbad, CA) announced that it will begin shipping its first proprietary zinc-fuel-cell-based products. The products provide backup power for equipment requiring 1kW to 5kW of power. The basic configuration consists of zinc fuel cells, a zinc "fuel tank" and a zinc regenerator that automatically recycles the fuel once utility power is restored.

"The shipment of our first products marks a major milestone in our company's history, denoting our transition from development-stage to commercialization," said Metallic Power CEO Jeffrey Colborn. "It also marks a milestone for those looking for extended backup power. Zinc regenerative fuel cells will provide a cost-effective, environmentally friendly alternative to lead-acid batteries, and a clean, quiet alternative to generators. Compared to hydrogen fuel cells and advanced batteries, our pricing and underlying costs are lower and our fuel is non-explosive."
