Marubeni Announces Japanese Direct FuelCell Siting

December 26, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Marubeni Corp. (Japan) and FuelCell Energy Inc. (Danbury, CT) announced the siting of a Direct FuelCell® (DFC®) power plant at the Nippon Metal Industry Co. Ltd. (Japan). Marubeni will install a 250kW DFC® power plant to the Sagamihara Works of Nippon Metal in the second quarter of 2003. The facility produces specialty steels for use in FuelCell Energy's fuel cell stacks. The cogeneration unit will operate using town gas and supply the facility with electricity and steam.

"Marubeni is excited to provide Nippon Metal with a reliable source of high-quality, high-efficiency power using clean, DFC technology," said Takeo Nakata, general manager of Marubeni's New Energies Team. "The industrial market in Japan and Asia holds significant potential for large-scale DFC distributed power generation. This is particularly true in areas where traditional DG technology is not appropriate due to high emissions."
