LIPA Starts Two Wind Turbines at Shoreham Nuclear Plant

January 25, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA, Hauppauge, NY) officially dedicated two windmills at the former Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant. The nuclear plant, which would have provided power for about one million homes, never went on line commercially and the windmills have been operating for almost a month now.

The 100-foot tall windmills will produce 200,000 kW of power each year, enough to power about 20 average sized homes on Long Island. The windmills are part of an overall energy plan that will include solar and hydrogen fuel cell technology.
