LIPA Announces RFP for Fuel Cell Project

February 07, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA, Hauppauge, NY) announced that it is looking for a firm to install and operate fuel cells that would produce up to 10 MW of electricity, enough to power 10,000 homes. The fuel calls would be installed at LIPA's substation in West Babylon.

LIPA's request for proposals (RFP) seeks proposals to build, own and operate a 10 MW fuel cell facility for up to a 20-year period. In return, LIPA will enter into a power purchase agreement for up to 20 years for the capacity, energy ancillary services and environmental attributes from the project. LIPA also will assist with community relations and permitting activities, and will be responsible for providing the natural gas commodity for generation as well as for all gas transportation and LDC delivery charges.

The RFP states that the authority would like to have the fuel cells up and running between April 1 and July 1 of next year.
