May 25, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Hyundai Motor Co. (Ann Arbor, MI), announced that it is building two prototype fuel cell-powered sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) that use fuel cells from International Fuel Cells (IFC, South Windsor, CT). The internal-combustion engine in Hyundai's new "Santa Fe" SUV will be replaced by a single-stack, proton-exchange membrane IFC fuel cell and an electric drive system supplied by Enova Systems (Torrance, CA), which already supplies Hyundai with electric and hybrid-electric vehicle components. The agreement with IFC may be extended to produce two additional vehicles that will also be used to demonstrate the technology and for testing in real-world driving situations.
