General Motors Halts Production of Its EV1 Electric Car

February 03, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

General Motors Corp. (Detroit, MI) announced it has stopped production of its EV1 electric car, citing waning interest from its customers. General Motors Vice Chairman Harry J. Pearce said that the company is shifting its attention from all-electric cars to vehicles powered by hybrid-fuel-electric systems and fuel cells.

The company will still lease EV1s in California and Arizona, but will recycle used EV1s as their leases end, giving them new battery packs or other updates.
