ESD Engaged to Design 100% Renewable Energy Data Centers for VIESTE Energy

July 22, 2013 by Jeff Shepard

VIESTE Energy, LLC has engaged Environmental Systems Design, Inc. (ESD) to perform design services on a national portfolio of data centers that will be run on 100 percent renewable energy. These data center facilities will be supported by the co-development of 8-15MW of power generated from gasification based waste-to-energy facilities. Power is produced from a turbine generator that feeds the facility. This system also produces chilled water for use in the data centers.

This portfolio of renewable energy power generation facilities coupled with environmentally friendly solid waste management creates a very low PUE and a negative carbon footprint, one of the first undertakings of its kind in the United States. The first phase of this portfolio is funded and development is under way in Arizona. The site is an 8.5 acre parcel adjacent to the Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Center. The first phase of the project will include 171,005 SF powered shell and core of new construction. The project will be a two (2) phase project capable of supporting eight (8) data halls, equaling a total of 80,000 SF of raised floor.

“This is one of the most exciting projects within the data center industry today,” noted Paul Schlattman, Vice President of Mission Critical Facilities at ESD. “The facilities offer extremely competitive utility rates and a host of other environmental and business benefits.”

Mark Branaman Co-Managing Member at VIESTE Energy, LLC stated: “We are in the business of developing and operating base load renewable energy production facilities. We selected ESD for our team because they have extensive experience and knowledge of energy and data centers. We look forward to similarly partnering with a top Data Center developer and are confident that this will be a tremendous offering to the data center industry in terms of sustainability, environmental benefit, and energy efficiency opportunities.”

Faced with growing pressure for green building solutions, the real estate community continues to answer the challenge by implementing new and existing green strategies. LEED classifications, corporate carbon footprint reduction initiatives, and efficiency of building systems illustrate just a few of the leading trends changing the way we view our real estate. Vieste Energy, LLC, a firm focused on development of various types of real estate and infrastructure, has joined the call for green building solutions by developing a zero (0) carbon footprint building concept. The way Vieste Energy, LLC is able to achieve this is by utilizing a Sustainable Renewable Energy source to generate power for the building.

The Sustainable Renewable Energy will be produced nearby the building site at a Material Reclamation Facility (MRF) and Waste to Energy facility (WtE). The facilities will not only be able to produce renewable energy but will also create chilled water that can be used at the building for cooling solutions. The facilities will have the capacity to create 12.5 megawatts of renewable energy and enough chilled water for any type of real estate asset.
