British Government Funds 19 Solar PV Sites

December 26, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

The Department of Trade and Industry (Aberdeen, Scotland) announced that the British government will provide £2.2 million to fund the installation of 435kW of solar panels on 19 buildings around the country. The projects are the second set of proposals to be approved under the £20 million Major Photovoltaic Demonstration Programme of the Department of Trade and Industry, and were selected from 43 applications submitted.

The 19 projects include a parking garage in Woking that claims to be one of the first multi-story car parks in the world with solar modules. A 10kW system on the headquarters of Powys County Council in Wales will be used to promote the Council's targets to deploy 100kW of photovoltaic (PV) panels, 20 new hydro schemes and 5,000m² of solar collectors by 2012. A 14kW system in the London Borough of Lambeth will provide mixed-size social housing in central London.
