Amperion Unveils Powerline Wi-Fi Broadband Solution

March 02, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Amperion Inc. (Chelmsford, MA), a provider of medium-voltage, powerline communication (PLC) equipment, unveiled both the Amperion Connect™ Powerline system and PowerWiFi™ access. The Amperion Connect system offers a suite of hardware and software products that enable broadband access, backhaul and internal utility services. PowerWiFi access links the power line network to end users via an 802.11b connection.

PowerWiFi access, a patent-pending technology, combines the pervasive infrastructure of power lines with readily available 802.11 (Wi-Fi) technology. Powerline is also a suitable method of providing utilities with low-cost methods to monitor and control their network and operational resources.

"PowerWiFi access enables us to deliver broadband quickly and inexpensively," commented Philip Hunt, CEO of Amperion. "The proven flexibility and economies of scale offered by Wi-Fi, combined with the pervasiveness of power lines, gives us an inherently safe means of delivering broadband to the widest number of families and businesses."
