Vishay Introduces New Solid Tantalum Chip Capacitors

June 27, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced the release of its new TANTAMOUNT® Hi-Rel COTS T97 series solid tantalum chip capacitors, designed to provide high-reliability screening and surge current testing options with extremely low ESR performance.

Featuring dual anode construction to ensure what is claimed to be the lowest ESR in their class, the new T97 capacitors are designed for safety-critical applications such as those found in the military, aerospace, and medical industries. Typical end products include weapons and radar systems, avionics, space-based electronics, and medical instrumentation. The new devices are said to offer designers a wide array of ratings not found in available MIL specifications, combining the flexibility and convenience of a commercial product with the reliability needed in demanding applications.

These conformal-coated capacitors offer screening options including Weibull grading, and surge current testing options in accordance with MIL-PRF-55365 in a wide variety of case sizes. This is said to differentiate these capacitors from commercial grade capacitors by featuring the required reliability and surge screening options necessary to ensure performance in Hi-Rel applications while still maintaining a maximum capacitance-voltage product, a figure of merit that measures the amount of energy a capacitor can store, and helps designers choose the best capacitor for their applications.

The devices have a capacitance range of 22 to 1500µF and a voltage range from 4 to 50V. They offer ultra-low ESR values, which range from 0.015 to 0.17Ω at +25°C and 100 kHz. Devices in the T97 series operate over a temperature range of –55 to +125°C.

Samples and production quantities of the new T97 solid tantalum chip capacitors are available now, with lead times of 8 to 10 weeks for larger orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery starts at $1.55 and varies depending on rating and screening options.
