Vicor Announces Military Temperature-Grade 48Vin V·I Chip Bus Converters

New Products Aug 02, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Vicor Corp. announced that the 48Vdc input V·I Chip™ Bus Converter family is now available in M temperature grade and rated for operation down to -55°C with storage down to -65°C. This announcement means that the 48V BCM™ family can be used in military and aerospace applications.

Each BCM converter is a high efficiency (>96%), narrow input range Sine Amplitude Converter (SAC) operating from a 38 to 55Vdc primary bus to deliver an isolated secondary voltage. Power density is up to 1,000W/in³ in the standard V·I Chip package, which is compatible with typical pick-and-place and assembly processes. The V·I Chip package provides flexible thermal management through its low junction-to-board and junction-to-case thermal resistance which are said to assure low junction temperatures and long life in the harshest environments. Owing to its high conversion efficiency and operating temperature range, the BCM may not require a discrete heat sink in typical applications.

"The M-grade BCM is especially well suited for airborne applications due to its low temperature operation, small size, light weight and high power density," said Stephen Oliver, Vice President of Marketing and Sales.

M-grade 48Vdc input BCMs are available in both J-lead (SMT) and through-hole package versions. Models will be available from stock beginning in September. Lead time is typically 4 weeks. Pricing is as low as $81.25 in OEM quantities.
