Tyco Electronics Offers SC Series Power Modules

January 11, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Power Systems Inc. (Dallas, TX) announced its SC™ Series power modules, a smaller pin-for-pin replacement of the industry-standard 1in x 2in, 10W to 15W, dc-dc converter. The SC Series modules provide a 47% PWB space savings and increased efficiency. The SC Series converters are designed as an alternative to the industry-standard THD product, or as an SMT version for new applications in a wide range of data communications, networking, test/measurement, and industrial process control equipment.

The SC Series modules can be used to convert a nominal 24V (18Vdc to 36Vdc) input to a precisely regulated output voltage from 3.3V (up to 3.5A) to 12V (up to 1.25A). The modules have a full load efficiency of 85% at 5Vout. Open-frame construction combined with a small profile and footprint (1.10in x 0.96in x 0.335in) makes the modules suitable for applications where board space is at a premium.

Safety features, including protection against short-circuiting or output over-current/over-voltage, are built into all SC Series modules. Standard features also include remote on/off and output voltage adjustment. All modules are capable of operating in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +85°C. Output ripple and noise are minimized, removing the need for additional external filtering. The SC Series modules also offer monotonic startup, even into pre-biased loads.

Available in both through-hole or surface-mount packages, the SC Series modules are priced at $15.80 in 1,000-unit quantities. Samples are available now. The SC Series are also available in -48Vin versions.
