Tyco Electronics Debuts HW005 Series DC/DC Converters

March 21, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Power Systems (Dallas, TX) announced a family of 2 x 1 single-output, industry-standard footprint dc/dc converters, the HW005 Series, which delivers up to 20W (4A at 5Vdc) and 5A at 3.3V output. The new series enables manufacturers of communications and networking equipment to use standard surface-mount assembly techniques to improve efficiency in automated production lines.

The HW005 surface-mount version incorporates an innovative column-pin-connector that allows the module to self align on the customer board during the reflow process. The column-pin technology automatically compensates for any co-planarity issues and ensures that reliable connections are made during the assembly.

The products operate over an input-voltage range of 18Vdc to 36Vdc (24V nominal) or 36Vdc to 75Vdc (48V nominal) and delivers one precisely regulated output from 5.0V to as low as 1.0V. A low profile of only 8.5mm is achieved in a 1.86in x 1.16in footprint (47.2mm x 29.5mm). The HW005 delivers a typical full-load efficiency of 87 percent at 3.3V.

The HW005 family of dc/dc converters is available in a broad range of output voltages (5.0V, 3.3V, 2.5V, 1.8V, 1.5V, 1.2V and 1.0V) with an output-voltage adjustment trim of ±10 percent and a tight output-voltage set-point of ±1 percent. Other features of the HW005 Series include remote on/off and protection from high temperature, current or voltage levels. The module meets 2250Vdc I/O isolation and is also designed to meet requirements for basic insulation.

Samples are available now. The HW005 modules are priced at $18.60 in 10,000-unit quantities.
