Tyco Electronics Announces New HW025 Series of DC/DC Converters

April 05, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics (Harrisburg, PA) announced that its Power Systems unit has launched a new series of compact dc/dc converters that address the need for power products able to support the rapidly changing load and voltage requirements for semiconductors. The design allows it to address real-time changes in power requirements, making it applicable for the rapidly evolving broadband, wireless, transportation and optical networking markets.

The new, open-frame dc/dc converter operates over an input voltage range of either 24V (18Vdc to 36Vdc) or 48V (36Vdc to 75Vdc). The HW025 Series provides precisely regulated dual positive output voltages with combinations of 5V/3.3V and 3.3V/2.5V, with a total output power rating of 25W. The flexibility of the design supports migration towards lower logic voltages, achieved by a wide output-voltage adjustment range that allows a user to program the module output voltage down to 1.5V. In combination with a power trading architecture, these features enable the same HW025 version to operate at different output voltages, allowing data and telecommunications equipment designers to use the same power module for a variety of applications, thus reducing number of parts and improving time to market.

According to Tyco, the compact size of the HW025 modules, which measure 7.5mm x 54.4mm x 57.4mm, makes it easier for designers to free up valuable board space and reduce the overall size of their products.

"Communications systems designers today must anticipate future changes in the network infrastructure and applications, and are therefore looking for a future-proof approach to their power supplies," said Kirit Wadhia, director of sales and marketing at Tyco Electronics Power Systems. "The new HW025 meets this need by adapting to different voltage and load requirements that the designer may have, helping him to fulfill his various requirements with one common solution."
