Tyco Announces New Generation of High-Efficiency, High-density Bus Converters

New Products Feb 02, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Power Systems Inc. has announced the availability of the next generation QBW025A0B Series of dc-dc power modules, which provide up to 25A output current in an industry standard quarter brick. The modules are suited for high power 12V intermediate bus voltage applications where multiple lower output voltages are generated using modular point of load (POL) converters, Tyco officials said.

The QBW025A0B series can deliver 50% more power to the load in a standard quarter-brick package compared to the previous generation. In addition, its wide input range makes it suited for telecommunications, enterprise and other demanding applications that require low power dissipation and high efficiency, officials said.

The modules operate over an input voltage range of 36 to 75 Vdc and provide a single, optimally regulated 12V ± 5% output while operating at a high power density of 220W/in³. These modules

incorporate synchronous rectification technology and innovative packaging techniques to achieve ultra high efficiency — reaching 94% at a 12V full load, officials said. This leads to lower power dissipations thereby eliminating the requirement for a heat sink in many applications. The output is fully isolated, allowing versatile polarity configurations and grounding connections. In addition, the built-in filtering for input and output minimizes the need for external filtering.

The modules are rated for an operating temperature range of -40 degrees C to 85 degrees C in an industry standard quarter-brick package of 57.9 mm x 36.8 mm x 10.6 mm (2.28 in. x 1.45 in. x 0.42 in.). Standard features include remote on/off, low output ripple and noise, output over current/voltage protection, short-circuit protection and input under-voltage lockout. Optional features include active load sharing, baseplate (-H), auto restart after a fault shutdown and case ground pin. The series is fully compliant to hazardous substance EU Directive 2002/95/EC and is compatible in a lead-free or lead silicon (PbSn) reflow environment. In addition, the Consumer Electronics mark meets 73/23/EEC and 93/68/EEC directives.

The modules can be used in a variety of applications, ranging from distributed power architectures to complex telecom networks. Each module is priced at $57.10 for 1,000 units. Samples are available now and standard lead time is stock to eight weeks.
