TI Offers bqTINY II Series Battery Chargers

January 19, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) announced its bqTINY™ II Series of single-cell, lithium-ion and lithium-polymer battery chargers for personal digital assistants, cell phones, digital cameras and wireless headsets that charge from a universal serial bus (USB) port or ac wall adapter.

The bqTINY II Series offer fully integrated, fully compliant USB port and ac adapter supply management capability through an autonomous power-source selection, power field effect transistor and current sensor, high accuracy current and voltage regulation, charge status, and termination - all on a single piece of silicon.

The new chargers integrate a reverse-blocking protection scheme to prevent battery drainage in the absence of the dc supply. Other integrated features include voltage and current regulation, safety timers for pre-charge and fast charge phases, charge status outputs to light-emitting diodes or a microcontroller, temperature sense, and charge termination.

The bqTINY II ICs are now available in volume. All bqTINY and bqTINY II devices are packaged in a 10-lead, 3mm x 3mm, QFN package. The bq24020 is priced at $2.09, the bq24022 is $2.09 and the bq24023 is $2.09 per unit in quantities of 1,000.
