TI Announces New TPS65010 Power IC

August 03, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) announced a new highly integrated, feature-rich, battery charging and power conversion, integrated circuit (IC) that delivers high performance and power conversion efficiency up to 97%. The TPS65010 smart power IC fulfills power management requirements for single-cell, lithium-ion or lithium-polymer, battery-powered applications that contain multiple power rails and advanced application processors such as personal digital assistants, smart phones and digital cameras.

The TPS65010 power IC leverages TI’s 3307A12 manufacturing process technology to integrate essential control building blocks, external components and battery management intelligence to more efficiently manage power for applications processors. The 7mm x 7mm TPS65010 integrates two synchronous, step-down, dc/dc converters with integrated FETs; one 1A converter for system voltages; and one 400mA converter for processor cores. It deploys pulse-frequency modulation and pulse-width modulation switching technology to support peak efficiencies of 97% and maximum efficiency across a wide range of load currents. The TPS65010 also provides a low quiescent current of 70µA and several low-power modes.

The IC also incorporates two 200mA low dropout regulators for additional voltage generation, allowing for supply from one of the two integrated step-down converters or directly from the battery, and operating with an input-voltage range between 1.8V and 6.5V. The TPS65010 includes TI’s latest linear battery charger technology with integrated 1A charge FET with universal serial bus and ac-adapter supply management. An I2C™ compatible communication interface supports frequencies from 100kHz and 400kHz, and allows easy control of various operational modes of the TPS65010’s charging, dc/dc conversion and low drop-out regulation parameters.

The TPS65010 is now available in volume. Packaged in a 48-lead, 7mm x 7mm, QFN package, pricing is $4.99 per unit in quantities of 1,000.
