Thomson Airpax Mechatronics Announces 58mm Brushless DC Motors

May 01, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Thomson Airpax Mechatronics (Cheshire, CT) announced a new 58mm series of brushless dc motors that they claim is 30 percent more efficient and 33 percent smaller than industry-standard packages. The new motors features a three-phase MOSFET PWM drive with surface-mounted components that eliminate the need for external controllers.

Available in 14W and 17W outputs with motor lengths of 46mm and 55mm respectively, these brushless motors have peak power capability up to 100W and encoder pulses per revolution of 45 or 50. The 58mm series has an operating speed of 50rpm up to 5,000rpm without dynamic balancing, and up to 10,000rpm with dynamic balancing.

Thomson Airpax Mechatronics claims that the motor's proprietary drive electronics allow it to achieve 75-percent peak efficiency. The motors have typical EMI levels of 25dba and satisfy US, FCC and European standards. They are suitable for use in a range of applications including office equipment, appliances, medical pumps, and pick-and-place equipment.
