Taiyo Yuden Announces 4.7uF Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor in 0402 Case Size

July 24, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.), Inc. announced the mass production availability of its new AMK105BJ475MV multi-layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) for decoupling power-line circuits in high-performance ICs used in cell phones, digital still cameras and other battery-powered portable electronics.

The AMK105BJ is claimed to be the first MLCC to achieve a capacitance rating of 4.7uF in the 1.0 x 0.5 x 0.5mm (EIA 0402) case size. The AMK105BJ allows designers to obtain the desired capacitance value from a single 0402-size device, where two 2.2uF-rated 0402 capacitors were previously required. This is said to save cost and simplify manufacturability by reducing the parts count by 50% for this application. Moreover, the AMK105BJ allows designers to downsize from 0603 size components (1.6 x 0.8 x 0.8mm) to the more compact 0402 size, which is said to result in space savings of 76% (volume) and 61% (area) without sacrificing device performance.

The considerable size reduction of the AMK105BJ is said to effectively double available capacitance for the same component mounting area. The benefits to the OEM are claimed to be more compact, higher-performance equipment through reduced number of components, increased mounting density and higher capacitance.

Key performance specifications of the AMK105BJ475MV multi-layer ceramic capacitor include: EIA case size: 0402; capacitance range (tolerance): 4.7uF (+/- 20%); capacitance change: +/-15%; tangent of loss angle: 10% max; EIA temperature characteristic: X5R; temperature range: -55 to +85°C; rated voltage: 4Vdc; and RoHS compliant.
