System Heatsinks Provide Modular Cooling Options

February 23, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Following the launch of their C40 heatsink designed to accommodate a 40mm fan, Ohmite Manufacturing Co. has responded to requests from designers to provide a larger option for mounting up to six TO-247 and/or TO-264 devices, plus larger components. The new B60/C60 does this, but it goes one step further. Using the much larger surface available for component mounting, they offer two versions. One is the 75mm long C60, which is just like the C40, with a channel to hold the camming clips and designed to secure TO-247 and TO-264 style devices without the need for holes or screws, and the other is the B60 version which offers an ample mounting surface for a variety of larger components, such as Ohmite's WFH90 Series, 850 Series, or TGH Series SOT-227 packages.

When used in pairs the heatsinks have mounting holes to accommodate a standard 60mm x 60mm fan. On the B60, Ohmite has cleared out the channel for the clips and removed some fins on the component side in order to create a mounting surface where a variety of power resistors can be mounted with screws. The levels of thermal management on both models has been designed to cope with a number of heat generating applications such as high intensity discharge lighting.

Heatsinks and clips can be purchased individually, or designers can opt for Ohmite to assemble a full system with customer-specified components, or request custom lengths to mount even more devices.
