Stackpole Electronics Intros AV Series Varistors

March 24, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Stackpole Electronics Inc. (SEI, Raleigh, NC) introduced its AV Series of leaded and SMD, single-layer and multi-layer varistors designed for the automotive industry. The AV Series devices are designed for 12 V, 24 V and 42 V automotive systems.

The chip-style, surface-mount, multi-layer AV Series is available in 0805 to 3225 case sizes, with single-pulse peak current from 120 A to 2,000 A (8 µs/20 µs waveform) and single-pulse transient energy spikes from 0.3 J to 17 J (10 µs/1,000 µs waveform). The through-hole style AV Series employs round and square-shaped designs to achieve transient energy absorption due to improved internal energy distribution.

The AV Series is available in single-layer (for >50 J) and multi-layer (<50 J) components, in disc sizes from 6 mm to 40 mm. The AV Series offers single-pulse peak current from 400 A to 2,000 A (8 µs/20 µs waveform) and single-pulse transient energy spikes from 1.6 J to 76 J (10 µs/1000 µs waveform). In comparison with typical round automotive disc varistors, the AV Series offers electrical characteristics in a smaller size.

Pricing for the AV Series (SMD version) and AV Series (through-hole version) is $0.25 and $0.35 each, respectively, in 1,000-piece quantities.
