Sipex Introduces New Synchronous Buck Controllers that Convert 22V to 0.8V

September 13, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Sipex Corp. has introduced two new single-rail, synchronous buck controllers, the SP6133 and SP6136. With an integrated 5V low drop-out bias, the SP6133 and SP6136 are designed to drive a pair of external N-channel FETs switching at 300 kHz and 600 kHz frequencies from a single voltage rail for point-of-load applications. These devices have a wide input voltage range from 4.5 to 24V with duty cycles down to 3.5%, enabling direct conversion from high input voltage to low output voltages in a single step, thereby eliminating the need for intermediate bus conversion.

Features of the SP6133 and SP6136 include programmable start-up UVLO that sets the minimum input voltage for safe operation, an internal VCC UVLO that ensures the controller has sufficient voltage to properly operate, a PWRGD output with adjustable delay indicates when the output voltage is in regulation, eliminating the need for additional supervisory circuits; and high-current gate drivers that enable output currents up to 30A.

The SP6133 and SP6136 are available in small 3 mm x 3 mm, QFN16 package, in an extended temperature range version (-40 to +85°C). The price is $1.50 in volumes of 1000.
