SiGe Semi Intros SE5102/3 RangeCharger PAs

June 01, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

SiGe Semiconductor Inc. (Canada) introduced a pair of RangeCharger power amplifiers (PAs) that feature a nominal quiescent current of 65mA, prolonging the battery life of IS-95 and cdma2000 1x mobile handsets operating in the 824MHz to 849MHz band. The SE5102 and SE5103 offer a power output of 28dBm while operating in CDMA mode with a power-added efficiency of 39%. The PAs draw <2µA of current during standby and also feature a power-down mode.

The SE5102 is a single-band, two-stage, PA based on a SiGe BiCMOS process that is claimed to improve power efficiency, linearity and integration. The SE5103 integrates the high-performance device into a fully matched, plug-and-play module that contains all active circuitry, including input and output impedance matching elements with a 50-ohm load. Both also feature on-chip protection circuitry to ensure reliable performance under high-voltage SWR conditions.

The SE5102 is available in a 16-pin, 3mm x 3mm, QFN package and is priced at $0.75, while the SE5103 is supplied as a 4mm x 4mm x 1.5mm, 10-pin, LGA device priced at $1.50.
