RECOM Introduces Low-Power AC-DC-Converter with Low No-Load Power Consumption

May 08, 2011 by Jeff Shepard

RECOM announced the release of a new range of isolated ac-dc power supply modules with very low standby input currents, ideally suited for low power applications or standby power supplies.

The RAC01 and RAC02 offer 1 or 2W of output power from a universal input voltage of 90-265Vac and yet draw only 30mW in standby. The RAC03 offers a higher output power of 3W yet draws only 80mW when unloaded.

For many applications this low standby power will significantly reduce energy consumption and reduce costs compared with standard power supplies. Typical applications include low power supplies for clocks, remote control receivers, microcontroller circuits, wireless control systems or as relay drivers to switch higher power ac-dc supplies that otherwise could not meet green power/energy star regulations.

Unlike other low power ac-dc modules, the RAC01, RAC02 and RAC03 offer high efficiency, well regulated, short-circuit protected dc outputs with 3.3, 5, 9, 12, 15 or 24V voltage options and a line and load regulation of typically ±2%. The conversion efficiency is up to 78%, which enables RECOM to guarantee an operating temperature range of -25 to +85°C for the one watt part, reducing to +80°C for the two and three watt converters. The converters are designed to give a long, trouble-free life (MTBF > 1.000.000 hours).

Although the converters are very compact with a low profile case that is 17mm high or less, they contain a fully featured input filter and meet EN55022 Class B EMC without the need for any external components. The converters offer 3kVac isolation and are CE and UL safety certified.

These low power ac-dc modules are fully tested, ready-to-use solutions that will save design engineers development time, component handling and board space without compromising on safety, lifetime or energy efficiency.
