Pulse Intros New Planar Transformer and Inductor

New Products Nov 19, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Pulse Engineering (San Diego, CA) introduced two new magnetic components for use with telecommunications power modules. Applications include industrial control systems, automotive electronics and heavy equipment systems utilizing 60W to 100W power supplies.

The Pulse PA0191T (planar transformer) and P1977T (planar inductor) were designed for use with Linear Technology's LT1681/LTC1698 chipset which uses a dual-switch-forward topology to provide an isolated 3.3V/20A output from a 48V input.

The planar technology allows the devices to be optimized to reduce ac losses and minimize leakage inductances while minimizing the physical size and height of the component. The modules operate over a very broad -40 to +135 degrees C temperature range.

The planar-design transformer and inductor are in a low-profile (8.26mm) surface-mount package that utilizes 40 percent less board space than conventionally wound transformers. The surface-mount packaging of these devices is compatible with all contemporary pick-and-place processes.

The PA1977T is priced at $2.30 for quantities of 10,000, while the PA0191T is priced at $4.80 for 10,000-piece quantities.
