Power-One Intros New Y5117P POL Converter

September 18, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Power-One Inc. (Camarillo, CA) introduced its new Y5117P, which is claimed to be the industry’s first surface-mountable (SMT), vertical SIP, point-of-load (POL) converter. The 17A product is an extension of Power-One’s advanced maXyz™ product line and was developed at Power-One’s Silicon Power Systems Division.

The combination of a wide input-voltage range (3Vdc to 13.2Vdc) and a programmable output (0.7Vdc to 3.6Vdc) allows the use of just one part in many intermediate bus architecture POL applications. Additional cost savings result from not having to utilize a through-hole process on an otherwise all-SMT board and the cost of the board space saved when compared to horizontally mounted SMT products.

A small 7.85mm x 32mm (0.3in x 1.26in) footprint results in a current density of 45A/in² (6.8A/cm²). Additional features include remote sensing, remote on/off, output short-circuit protection, and a -40°C to +125°C operating-temperature range.

Pricing is $27 each in quantities of 1,000. Evaluation kits are available upon request. Production quantities are typically available in 8 to 10 weeks. The Y5117P is available in tape-and-reel packaging to facilitate manufacturing with automatic pick-and-place equipment.
